Did you know that hot weather can actually be worse for your battery than the cold one? Heat can cause the battery fluid to evaporate. This will damage the internal components of the battery. The extremely cold weather is also shortening the life of your battery, hard starts can drain it fast.
Car batteries are designed to last between 2 to 5 years depending on the vehicle, battery type, climate and other. Most of us keep a car for more than 2 years so getting in the situation that your car won’t start because of a dead battery happens pretty often.
Replacing an old battery is not so expensive and it could save you money, time and frustration if you are doing it in time, but we understand that sometimes you just forget or you don’t have the time.
There are some signs you can watch for if you know you are in need to replace your car battery soon:
- A slow engine crank when starting the car
- The interior light may be dimmer than before.
You may see corrosion around the terminals. This is a sign that electrical damage has already started to occur. Removing the corrosion is a good way to extend the life of your battery. You can remove the corrosion yourself using a mix of water and baking soda and an old toothbrush to scrub it.
If you are on the side of the road or a parking lot and can’t get a hold of baking soda you can try using a bottle of coca-cola and some paper towel. Just pour the coke over the battery terminals, let it say for a minute than wipe clean with the paper towel. Repeat this process several time until you are able to remove the built up corrosion. Most of the times that is enough to be able to start your car or get a jump start from another vehicle.
